In 2012 Google updated their system for ranking websites and a lot of link building tactics that previously worked now don’t work.
In this video Cyrus Shepard creates a simple rule for identifying a quality link:
- If you don’t control the anchor text in the link it is probably a worthwhile, quality link.
- If you do get to control the anchor text it is probably a low value (or even negative value) link.
