Hi, I’m Darren from Rise Local, today we’re going to talk about how you can get 3 listings on page 1 of Google. Now, I understand as a business owner you’ve heard plenty over recent years about how important Google is to your business and how important it is to be on page 1 of Google. We’re going to take that a little bit further today and talk about how you have the potential to really dominate page 1 of Google with 3 listings instead of just 1. Before we get into that, I’m just going to recap why these listings on Google are so important.
I’m going to hit you with some numbers here, and the first 1 is 87%. 87% of Australians are online every day. True, it may be a slightly sad statistic, but we are a nation of screen addicts. We’re on laptops, desktops, tablets, smartphones. We’re online all the time.
82% of people say that when they need information, the internet is the first place they look. You probably know from your own experience, one of the first things we do when we’ve got a question in our minds is we go straight to Google and type in our query. Once we’re on Google and we get our search result, 90% of people do not look past page 1 of the search results. This true of other search engines like Bing too. 90% of people don’t go past page 1, which means this is really a winner takes all game. The people, the businesses who have listings on page 1 have got an opportunity to connect with people when they’re searching for their services. People who are not on page 1, or those businesses who haven’t got a listing on page 1 really do miss out.
The good news is there are 3 ways to rank on Google. It’s important as a business owner to really understand what these 3 ways are and how they are different from each other.
We are going to run through an example, and I’ve done a search here of plumber Bondi. I’m looking for a plumber and I’m based in Bondi. This is the results page. This is a Google search result. You’ll all be familiar with what this looks like or what a search results page looks like. What’s important to understand is that 3 different Google products deliver the information that you see on the search page. You can think of them as 3 different databases if you like. It’s important to remember that they are really different from each other, and if you structure your marketing properly, it’s possible for you to rank in each one of them. The first is Google AdWords, the second is Google My Business, and the third is the traditional Google search products. We’ll run through each one of those now.
Google AdWords, we’d all be familiar with the 3, sometimes 4 ads at the top of the search page. You can see hear that the Everlast Plumbing have the number 1 spot, Ruttley Plumbing, number 2, and Plumbers Bondi, number 3. Now, these businesses don’t pay Google to have their ad appear here. They only pay Google if someone clicks on their ad. Google now has annual revenues of around $70 billion, the vast majority of that comes from the Google AdWords product. That’s a lot of people clicking on a lot of ads all around the world. Businesses run these ads because they work. They can be a very effective way of generating leads and clients for your business.
Now, this particular search, Google has shown what we call a local search results immediately after the ads. Because I’m looking for a service, a plumber in a particular area, Bondi, Google has chosen to show their local results, so I could find a plumber who’s going to be very close to me, in the suburb that I’m searching for. What’s important to understand about this is that these listings comes from Google’s My Business platform. It was previously called Google Plus, before that it was called Google Places. It’s had some other names in the past. These listings are not so much reliant on your website. They are reliant on your Google My Business listing. Google have pulled this data from a whole bunch of sources including the Yellow Pages. Even if you haven’t set up a Google My Business profile, it’s possible your business is listed there anyway. There are techniques that can be used to get you ranking in these top 3 results of the Google Local search pack.
Immediately below the local results are the traditional Google organic results. What is important to understand about these results is that Google is ranking your website. The websites that it thinks are most relevant for the term plumbers Bondi are listed here. Beyond those, the organic results are a long way down the page. The ads are at the top, and then the local results, and then the organic results further down.
There are 3 ways to rank on page 1 of Google in this particular search query, plumber Bondi. You can do it via Google AdWords. You can do it via Google My Business. Or you can do it via Google’s traditional search products. Or better still, you can have a listing in all 3. That is how you can get 3 listings on page 1 of Google to connect with the 90% of people who do not look page 1 when they do a search.
